Muskoka Family Focus and Children’s Place (MFF) is thrilled to announce that we are the Muskoka affiliate for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library (DPIL).
MFF has been operating in the District of Muskoka as a nonprofit, charitable organization supporting families since 1987. Earlier this year MFF was approached about becoming the Muskoka Affiliate for Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library (DPIL), which had been offered to families for a few years until having to cease due to lack of funds in 2022. Since DPIL is very much in line with our Mission to provide “high quality child and family supports and educational resources”, MFF applied to become the Affiliate. We are excited to offer this program to every child from birth to 5 years old in the District of Muskoka.
DPIL is a community book-gifting program devoted to inspiring a love of reading in the hearts of children. Registered children are mailed a high quality, age-appropriate book monthly – free of charge to the family. These books foster family reading time, a love of books and help boost early literacy.
The Dollywood Foundation of Canada supports local organizations by managing the database of registrations, and selecting, ordering and distributing the books, of which 2 books per year per child are Canadian. All of the books come from Penguin Random House and have tips for reading each specific story, including questions parents might ask about the illustrations and the story line, to increase the child’s engagement.
Parents can access online resources about reading to children at different ages, and activity sheets for some of the books can be printed off.
Research conducted with DPIL’s local affiliates has shown positive results including parents being more interested in reading to their children, children being more interested in reading and “playing” with books, and improved early literacy skills.
As the local Affiliate, MFF is responsible for raising funds and then promoting the program to families in Muskoka. It costs approximately $3.85 per month per registered child. Once we have raised sufficient funds to provide books for the first year, we will open family registrations and begin distributing books to children, hopefully in September 2023. Ongoing fundraising will ensure that the program continues as registration increases.

Please give the gift of reading to families in Muskoka!
